Alaska Fishing Jobs

AFJC provides definitive info on getting fishing jobs in Alaska and lists your resume for 15,000 skippers. "The Alaska Fishing Jobs Clearinghouse is a great way to make contacts and to learn about what the AK fishing industry is all about. If you're interested in working on an Alaskan fishing boat, or if you're a skipper looking for good crew, you've come to the right place.

Job-hunters, please listen up. This website and its CrewCode Profile system were developed by licensed Alaskan commercial fishing boat skippers. It is the only one of its kind. We provide you with two things: the AFJC ToolKit, containing all the information you must know in order to be a well-prepared crewmember; and a personal CrewCode, that enables you to post and maintain a live-linked profile in our Skipper's Area. There is a labor shortage in Alaska these days. We need you!

Many skippers hire from our site, because it is by far the richest single source of inexperienced but motivated young men and women from all over America. At any given time we have several hundred job-seekers in our database, but there are several thousand entry-level crew positions available in Alaskan commercial fisheries. We do NOT charge recurring membership fees, so you can modify your CrewCode Profile and contact information anytime you wish, for as long as you wish. Many of our applicants have found multiple jobs by using AFJC.

How much can I make on a fishing boat in Alaska?
That depends entirely on the kind of vessel you find work on and the seafood species being targeted. Experienced crewmembers aboard crab vessels or longliners targeting sablefish and halibut may make $50,000 to $75,000 per year, or more. Seasonal crewmembers aboard salmon purse seiners and gillnetters in the AFJC Target Fisheries typically earn between $4,000 and $10,000 during a summer season. The ToolKit contains more detailed information on wages and contracts.

Can I get a job even if I have no experience working on boats?
Yes. Every crewmember and skipper in Alaska started out as a "greenhorn".

Aren't salmon an endangered species?
Far from it! Five different species of salmon thrive in the pristine wilderness conditions of Alaska's coastlines and streams. During 1999, "the season of the century", over 213 million salmon were harvested in Alaska, worth more than $350 million! Alaska is still, for all intents and purposes, an untouched wilderness, and the salmon runs are healthier than ever.
